Lose The Weight PERMANENTLY Using One Simple Rule

The best rule to live by for permanent weight loss is to commit to losing no more than 10% of your body weight at a time.   This should follow a loss rate of 1% of your total body weight per week AT MOST.  After no more than two or three months of a caloric deficit, return to eating a “base line” diet based on your new body weight.  Your “baseline” diet should have a balance of all three of the macronutrients ( check out this article on Real Whole Foods).  Spend at least three or four months eating your “baseline” diet so that your body becomes normalized to the new weight.  During this baseline period you may experience a weight gain of 2 or 3% but DON’T freak out!!  This is normal and could be due to several reasons.  One of the biggest causes is a slow down of your metabolism due to the caloric deficit.  Another reason is water weight gain from an increase in carbohydrate intake.  After this three to four month “baseline” diet is complete you can continue the weight loss by following the same rule of 10%.

Why This Works

When you commit to losing weight in short intervals all sorts of good things happen.

  1. You Stick To The Plan: Prolonging a weight loss effort past 60 or 90 days is going to dramatically increase your chances of “cheating” on your meal plan.  Caloric restriction means forgoing the fun foods and battling the ‘hangries.’  It’s a war you can’t win without coming off the front lines for some rest and relaxation.
  2. Metabolism Stays High:  Staying on an extended caloric deficit forces your body to react in self-defense.  Your metabolism slows down so that you don’t starve to death.  Of course this isn’t a real problem but your hunter-gatherer DNA doesn’t know about Eat24 or GrubHub.  You’ll feel better, burn more calories, and maintain your intensity at work and the gym.
  3. Maintain Your Social Life: Too many times the diet takes over your life.  You lose more friends than pounds.  When you’re trying to get to a healthy body weight by droppings a few pounds you don’t have to (and shouldn’t) turn your life upside down.
